The challenging five-week Rising Star program awards college credit to rising high school seniors who are ready for a summer college experience.  

Students may enroll in two college-level classes and have the opportunity to build or enhance their visual arts portfolios. Outside class, students complete assignments, take field trips, socialize, and enjoy area parks and other attractions. College housing and meals are provided. 

Students who successfully complete the Rising Star program earn college credit, which may be applied toward a baccalaureate degree at SCAD or at other colleges or universities. (Course credits are applied to degree requirements at the discretion of the accepting institution.)

Admission to the Rising Star program is highly selective and preference is given to applicants with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, SAT or ACT scores at or above the national average, strong portfolio, and demonstration of maturity, leadership and responsibility.

November 1 - 5

Monday is Critique Day! You need to have something new to show - WOW me! You need to have your High Breadth piece complete.

You should have already begun (if not, get to it) your concentration piece.

You are working on your own for a while now - so plan, Plan, PLAN!

SPAVA is Thursday, November 4th at 7pm!

Our next Studio Night is November 18th - only one in November. If you have missed more than one studio night, you need to make up the time with me.

Concentration Planning & Studio Night, 10/28

DUE ON MONDAY, 10/25 -
Planning pages for your first THREE concentration projects. Incorporate your artist influence with your thumbnail. Yes, that means 3 pages are due!! You need to have your concentration statement on the first planning page for Concentration #1.


STUDIO NIGHT, 10/28  (4-6pm) -
An afternoon at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens! You need to turn in your permission form and $5 entry fee for the Gardens by TUESDAY, 10/26!! Yes, there is a pumpkin carving contest that evening.

October 17-22

• Monday: Critique Day  for works in progress. Due Dates will be set for High Museum projects. Ms. Dreher will introduce the High Museum Surrealism Exhibition. Refined Concentration statements are due!
• Tuesday: Work day. 2D/Drawing students will work with Ms. Munson on photographing their work.
• Wednesday: Ms. Dreher will introduce the Scholastics competition and discuss entries for each student. Work day. 3D will work with Ms. Munson on photographing their work. 
• Thursday: Work Day!
• Friday: Work Day! Concentration Planning for #1-3 is due on Monday!

October 8 - What's Due Next Week?

For Next TUESDAY:

• 2D & Drawing: Breadth (Still Life or "places") and Studio Night/Home Figure Drawing
•  3D - Multiples and aluminum animal; you need to finish your clay figure this week
• All PORTFOLIOS - Plan for your High Museum Project:
• 2D/DR needs to have a good planned thumbnail
• 3D needs a plan with several views
• Make sure you include how you are going to pull this off

High Museum Project - Using one of your two artist reference pieces, create a breadth piece. You decide the technique and concept this time. You were to have begun getting ideas based on the artwork you were given and on why you thought I gave you this piece. Due date will be set once you complete your plan.

Concentration Ideas: Due on Thursday. Three possible concentration statements.

All studios had a journal due on Thursday – a planning page for the current studio night/ home project. I will grade this on Monday. Also due is your two entries from the High Museum.

3D Design --- Projects you should be working on:

• Breadth #2 - armature should be complete. Work with the aluminum cans and decide how best to recreate your animal using the outside designs and the silver of the insides. You need to have a photo of your animal from several views to complete this work. Should be completed by next Critique, 10/4.
• VVJ Planning page #1 due for Breadth #2 on Monday, Sept. 27 (should have both a photo of your animal for the sculpture and your thumbnail planning drawings)
• Home Assignment (Studio Night continuation) -- Complete your figure sculpture you began during studio night, due in greenware by October 7th.
• VVJ Planning #/1/2 for Home Project -- complete with a figurative artist reference and a mid-state photo; verbally decide how you plan to finish this project, due September 30.
• Any Home Projects - Multiples not completed is now considered late.
