January Critique Assignment

You need to complete the following for your online critique credit by midnight of January 31st.

Choose a work from two different student blogs and critique:

1. List and explain how the artist used principles of design. Choose from: Balance, Emphasis, Variety, Harmony/Unity, Pattern, Rhythm, and/or Movement.
2. What do you think the artist is trying to say with this piece?
3. What is working in this piece?
4. What needs to be improved on?

Individual Meetings Assignments

2-D Design Students:

• Alyssa - work on refining what is your idea behind nostaglia and memory, as well as what "materials" you are using.
• Nik - Make a new concentration statement
• Ivey-What will you do with the negative space?
• Madison - add "people" to your statement. Make them look different
• Sehra - What is your "mixed media"? Make a list of different ways you can use media.
• Olivia - Why ballerinas? Put it in your journal.

3-D Design Students:

• Barbara - What is the direction for your jewelry pieces? Look into the nature tie-in. Check out the 3-D concentration examples on the AP Central site (link to the right).
• Solmayra - Decide on how you will interpret your idea of culture and will show the differences and similiarities.
• Caroline- You need to be able to show the connection between the "extra materials" and your ceramic pieces.
• Cara-Research the variations of medusa.

Drawing Students:

• Maria-Make a complete statement and focus on the personalities of the people in the paintings.
• Sammie-What is it about "underwater" that attracts you?
• Nina - Explore the color choices and reasons for these choices of the Post-Expressionists and Blue Rider Group of the German Expressionists: Van Gogh, Gaugin, Munch, Kirchener.
• Paula - Research the "evil women" of Greek mythology to find out what are the similiarities and the differences between them.

January 23 - 28

• Monday: Critique Day! Individual Meetings. Work on concentration! Pre-planning pages due prior to project! ONline Critiquing Assignment will be passed out and you will have until Monday, January 31st at midnight to complete it!
• Tuesday-Friday: Individual Meetings. Work on concentration! Pre-planning pages due prior to project!
• Tuesday: Your 7 best pieces are due in class so you can be ready for Studio Night.
• Thursday: Studio Night from 4-6!

Week 1: January 5 - 7

• Wednesday: We handed out the new AP syllabus. (The syllabus has been uploaded to the blog.) We set up our folders for this semester. The example is in my room.
• Thursday: We completed our folders and discussed the expectations of this course. All students should have their own blog and have posted a work to be critiqued online by JANUARY 14TH.
• Friday: Planning was due and checked. 

All handouts will be ready to go into your folders next week. You need to have your portfolio page completed by end of day on Tuesday. Once it is complete, you will set up a time to meet with me one-on-one to discuss the direction your concentration should go in and what works you need to complete in time for our April 27th deadline.

Upcoming -- Studio Night, January 13th, 4-6pm

Homework for this week:

1. Parent/Guardian Acknowledgement Form is due signed by Monday, January 10
2. Critique day is Monday, January 10. I am expecting at least two new works.
3. If it snows and we are not at school on Monday, then the assignments are due on Tuesday, January 11.
